Jessica McDonald of WNY Flash Named NWSL Player of the Week
Jessica McDonald of the WNY Flash is named NWSL Player of the Week following her hat-trick performance against the Boston Breakers over the weekend. The Flash’s dominant showing saw the home team win 7-1 as McDonald receives the honor for the first time in her NWSL career.
Soccer News: Western New York Flash forward Jessica McDonald was voted the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) Player of the Week by the NWSL Media Association for Week 10 of the 2016 NWSL season.
McDonald, 28, tallied a hat-trick and an assist to help the Flash earn a 7-1 victory over the Boston Breakers at Rhinos Stadium in Rochester, N.Y. It was the team’s fourth win at home in five consecutive games this season.
The Phoenix, Ariz. native made her first goal of the game early in the 28th minute when she netted a short pass inside the top of the box from Sam Mewis.
The University of North Carolina product scored again in the 43rd minute when she headed the ball into the back of the net off a cross inside the box from Flash midfielder Elizabeth Eddy.
The Flash forward secured her hat trick in the 49th minute when she connected with a cross into the box from the left wing by Flash defender Jaelene Hinkle.
McDonald played 75 minutes in the game and finished with five shots (four on goal).
It is the first time McDonald has been honored as the NWSL Player of the Week, and is the 11th time a member of the Flash has won the award.
The Western New York Flash return to action Friday, July 1 at 7 p.m. ET against the Chicago Red Stars at Rhinos Stadium in Rochester, N.Y.
The NWSL Player of the Week is selected each week of the regular season by the NWSL Media Association, a collection of press that cover the league on a consistent basis.
