Team Rest of the World ‘s Roster Is Complete
The ICONS Cup – a first-of-its-kind, two-day, Ryder Cup-style team competition taking place April 22-24 at Jumeirah Golf Estates’ Earth Course – announces its Team, Rest of the World (ROTW), is complete with captain Darren Clarke’s selection of football legend Gabriel Batistuta.
Batistuta, who played the majority of his career for Italy’s Fiorentina, is Argentina’s all-time leading scorer with 56 goals in 78 matches. A participant in three World Cups, “El Angel Gabriel” was named to FIFA’s list of the world’s 100 greatest living players in 2004. He is known as one of the most complete strikers of his generation; a powerful player who was also a clinical finisher, accurate header and exceptional free kicker.
As the fifth footballer to join Team ROTW, Batistuta will be playing alongside fellow icons Luís Figo, Robbie Fowler, Andriy Shevchenko and Dwight Yorke. Their formidable squad also includes renowned cricketers Kapil Dev, Brian Lara and Shane Warne; rugby stars George Gregan, Brian O’Driscoll and Mike Tindall, MBE; and five-time Olympic gold medal rower Sir Steve Redgrave.“Darren’s team truly embodies its ‘Rest of the World’ moniker with Hall of Famers, World Cup winners and Olympic champions hailing from countries stretching across four continents,” says ICONS Cup Tournament Director Adrian Flaherty. “Fred Couples and Team USA will have their work cut out to top this collection of international superstars.”
Fred Couples Team USA’s captain will battle Team ROTW in the match play event. Baseball legend Ken Griffey Jr. is Couples’ first confirmed player, with more announcements expected in the coming days.
Conceived, owned and produced by Worldwide Sports & Entertainment, Ltd. (WWSEL), the ICONS Cup is a significant departure from a standard celebrity golf event. It exclusively features low-handicap, A-list athletes playing morning foursomes (alternate shot) on Day One, followed by 12 singles matches (Thursday, April 23). The ICONS Cup concludes the following day with 12 additional singles matches.
