2016 FIFA Futsal World Cup Recap and Preview
The eighth edition of the 2016 FIFA Futsal World Cup is well into group play with matches taking place today in Bucaramanga and Medellín. Futsal stars Ricardinho of Portugal and Brazilian maestro Falcão have kicked off their first matches with dominating performances as they aim to hoist the trophy on October 1st at Coliseo El Pueblo in Cali.
Futsal News: The 2016 FIFA Futsal World Cup kicked off in Colombia on Saturday with five days of action in the books.
We take a look at the results of the first days of the tournament and what you can expect on Day 6.
Group A Recap
Portugal sit atop Group A following a 1-1 draw in its opening match versus Colombia and a dominating 9-0 performance versus Panama who sit in the second spot. Panama won its opening match versus Uzbekistan on Day 1.
Colombia hold the third spot following two draws with the first coming against Portugal and the second in an intense 3-3 matchup with Uzbekistan.
Group B Recap
Russia leads Group B with two solid wins versus Thailand and Egypt. The latter clubs remain tied in points following a win and a loss for both sides.
Thailand edged Cuba 8-5 in a high-scoring matchup on Tuesday. Egypt cruised by Cuba with a 7-1 win to give the Caribbean country its second loss of the tournament.
Group C Recap
Italy remain in top form following two wins versus Paraguay and Guatemala to lead Group C. Paraguay and Vietnam both tallied a win and a loss in the opening matches.
Guatemala has yet to record a win with losses coming to Italy and Vietnam in its first two matches.
Group D Recap
Brazil kick off the tournament in thrilling fashion with a goal differential of +14 following its first two games of the tournament. The five-time champions edged a skillful Ukraine side 3-1 in its first match and followed up with a commanding 11-1 win versus Australia.
Australia and Ukraine remain with one win and a loss, while Mozambique have yet to record a win in the tournament.
Group E Recap
The last two groups are heading into their second set of matches today as Costa Rica and Argentina remain with one win to lead Group E. Costa Rica claim the first spot on goal differential.
Kazakhstan and Solomon Islands both recorded a loss in their opening matches versus the group leaders.
Group F Recap
Azerbaijan and Spain top Group F, as the Middle Eastern side maintains a slight advantage on goal differential.
Iran and Morocco will be looking to capture its first win of the tournament later this afternoon.
Day 6 Preview
Costa Rica take on Kazakhstan in the first Group E match of the day with kickoff set for 7:00 p.m. ET.
The second match will see a Group F matchup between Azerbaijan and Spain at 7:00 p.m. ET in Medellín.
Argentina face Solomon Islands in the second Group E match with kickoff set for 9:00 p.m. ET in Bucaramanga.
The final match of the day will feature Iran and Morocco of Group F with kickoff at 9:00 p.m. ET.
All matches will air live on Fox Soccer Go/2G0.
