Xolos Launch Campaign to Stop Bullying in the United States
Bullying is a serious ongoing problem in our country and invades youth sports as well as the classroom. According to US Youth Soccer, 28% of U.S. students in grades 6-12 reportedly have experienced bullying or are feeling bullied and 70.6% percent of teens have seen bullying occurring in their schools. Bullying can take many forms from verbal to physical and even emotional abuse. Soccer — the world’s favorite sport — provides a great opportunity to share a passion that unites and to work together to take a stand on bullying — and that’s just what Mexico’s pro club XOLOS did.
The Tijuana Xolos have launched its “Stop Bullying” campaign to promote tolerance and equality in conjunction with the St. John’s Episcopal School in Chula Vista. Alejandro Guido and Paul Arriola will visit local schools to encourage teamwork through activities with their peers.
Soccer News: Club Tijuana Xoloitzcuintles had always been a regional team with ties in both sides of the border. That is why the LIGA MX club launched its “Stop Bullying” campaign Sept. 6 in the United States in an effort to promote tolerance, inclusion, equality, union and respect at the binational level.
The campaign will take place in conjunction with the St. John’s Episcopal School in Chula Vista. Club Tijuana players Alejandro Guido and Paul Arriola will visit the school to help integrate activities that promote teamwork. The official mascot the Xolo Mayor will also be part of the campaign.
“Many people see bullying as a normal thing but it’s quite the contrary, ” Guido said.
Arriola had a similar message. “We should all stand together and say no to bullying,” said Arriola, like Guido, a Chula Vista native.
The campaign will end Sept. 30 with an activity that involves students from the school visiting Estadio Caliente Sept. 30 during the match against Atlas. School Director Phil Hadley will accompany the students.
“This works very nicely into our plan to work with them on how to treat each other,” Hadley said. “We think bullying is a problem around the country and we want to do our part to educate our students on what’s important on how they should behave.
“So, for the Xolos to come and work with us on that is a very welcomed program and I think it works in very nicely. We are very pleased that you are here. I think that is is very admirable that the team is taking on this campaign. I think that everyone can benefit from this. We look forward to the results and see what happens with this.”
