Cody Guthrie of Portland Spartans FC Named Mitre National Player of the Week
Cody Guthrie of Portland Spartans FC has been named the Mitre National Player of the Week for the fourth week of the NPSL. Guthrie played his collegiate career at Clark College and Concordia University being named NAIA All-American, NAIA 1st Team All-Conference, and Concordia Defensive Player of the Year in 2014.
Soccer News: Portland Spartans FC forward Cody Guthrie has been selected as the fourth Mitre National Player of the Week for the 2016 NPSL season. Guthrie had two goals and an assist in Portland’s 4-0 win over Real San Jose on Saturday.
“Cody’s love for the game and determination make him a lethal weapon inside the 18,” Spartans head coach Sergio Medel commented. “His hard work during the week pays off at the game.”
Guthrie starred for East Side United Soccer Club in Gresham, Oregon as a youth. His collegiate career includes time with Clark College (2010-2012) and Concordia University (2014-2015). At Clark he was named Les Schwab Player of the Month and NWACC All-Star.
He earned NAIA All-American, NAIA 1st Team All-Conference, and Concordia Defensive Player of the Year honors in 2014 and GNAC 3rd Team All-Conference honors in 2015. He also played for South Sound FC in 2015 as the club won a U-23 national title.
“Both my goals and my assist were because of my incredible team,” Guthrie added. “We have all worked really hard to get into a groove. It’s starting to come together and now it’s paying off. It’s a fantastic opportunity to be playing with the Spartans and it really feels like family. I’m super happy to be here.”
The Mitre National Player of the Week is announced every Friday during the regular season. The winner of this national honor is determined by a vote of media members from across the country.
