Youth Soccer News: As one of the largest and most successful event organizers in the region, Surf Cup Sports boosts tourism revenue in San Diego County through its 40 annual events, generating more than $139 million in economic impact.
“When people think of Surf, they think of a nationally-renowned soccer club,” said Mike Connerley, Surf Cup Sports’ President and Tournament Director. “That’s how it started, but over the past several years, Surf has evolved into a world-class sports event and facility management company. This year, we anticipate Surf Cup Sports events will bring half a million visitors to the region.”
Attendees of the events are expected to fill more than 85,000 hotel rooms this year, which makes Surf Cup Sports the region’s second largest generator of bookings, edging out the Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon and second place to Comicon International.
“The high volume of visitors generated by Surf Cup Sports is critical to San Diego’s tourism industry,” said Joe Terzi, President and CEO of the San Diego Tourism Authority. “Its events bring participants and families from across the country, and in some cases the world, to San Diego and lets them experience all that ‘America’s Finest City’ has to offer.”
In addition to hotel rooms, visitors who come to San Diego County for Surf Cup Sports events boost tourism revenue at the region’s restaurants, attractions and other businesses.
“Surf Cup Sports not only contributes to San Diego’s economy, it also invest in our region’s assets, youth leadership and community development,” said Mike McDowell, Executive Director of the San Diego Sports Alliance. “The organization has contributed several millions to charities and local organizations, and plans to invest millions in maintenance and renovations of its City of San Diego-owned facilities at the San Diego Polo Fields.”
“It’s clear that Surf Cup Sports has had a positive economic impact on our region through its events and programs,” said Jerry Sanders, President and CEO of the San Diego Regional Chamber of Commerce. “I hope to see Surf Cup Sports leverage their experience to continue increasing its presence and driving more events to San Diego County.”
The second annual Manchester City FC Americas Cup presented by Surf Cup Sports will be held Memorial Day weekend, May 28-30, 2016, and feature boys’ and girls’ teams with soccer players from the ages of eight to 16. With more than 350 teams expected to participate, the tournament is on pace to be one of the largest and most competitive youth soccer tournaments in the United States. The tournament represents a partnership with England’s premier soccer league team, Manchester City FC.
