Manchester City FC and San Diego Surf Soccer Club Create Powerful Partnership
As the competitive youth soccer heats up and many soccer clubs form partnerships with professional MLS or european clubs, one club reaches for a exclusive and strategic partnership. English Premier League champions Manchester City and San Diego Surf Soccer Club have signed a groundbreaking five-year development partnership.

The San Diego Surf Soccer, a highly influential and recognized youth soccer programs in the United States has partnered with one of the world’s most successful professional soccer clubs, the current Barclays Premier League Champions, Manchester City FC.
The owners of Manchester City already have a strong presence in the USA with the MLS franchise on the East Coast, New York City Football Club, which kicks off its inaugural soccer season soon.
The deal is the first of its kind for a Barclays Premier League Club in the US and took months to negotiate. Always looking to take it a step beyond other youth soccer clubs, San Diego Surf SC has worked to a create a meaningful and unique partnership with the giant English club and their Elite Development Squad. San Diego Surf SC is a member of the U.S. Soccer Development Academy and ECNL. The youth club has more than 80 teams and 1,300 players and its reputation as one of the leading clubs for the development of youth soccer players in the USA will be an asset for Manchester City in America.
Informally known as “The Citizens,” Manchester City FC is an English Premier League side, founded in 1880 as St Mark’s West Gorton. The Club won the title of Premier League champions in 2012 and 2014 and has won 26 major trophies. It counts the European Cup Winners’ Cup, four League Championship titles and five FA Cups amongst its honors. With Manuel Pellegrini as head coach since 2013, Manchester City plays its domestic home games at the Etihad Stadium in Manchester, England.
The first joint Manchester City / San Diego Surf SC event is the Manchester City FC Americas Cup presented by Surf Cup Sports. This new youth soccer tournament will be held on Memorial Day weekend 2015 and is a three-day tournament for competitive youth soccer teams with players ages 8 through 16. This first-class event is open to USYSA, US Club Soccer, Super Y League and FIFA affiliated teams. Champions of the tournament will be guaranteed entry to the soccer loco XXXV Surf Cup, one of the most prestigious youth soccer tournaments in the United States.

In the spirit of collaboration and the partnership, Surf’s top youth soccer players will have the opportunity to visit and train at the City Football Academy, the Club’s new headquarters in Manchester. Both parties also plan to send teams to each other’s home fields for exhibition and showcase purposes in the coming years that will serve to develop the partnership between Surf and Manchester City in the future.
Other benefits of the partnership will see Surf Soccer and Manchester City combine to deliver an exclusive youth camp that will be managed under the supervision of Manchester City coaches, teaching young players the same philosophies and training techniques used by Manchester City’s championship first team. These programs will be an excellent opportunity for players from Southern California to showcase their talents. Manchester City will also deliver coach education clinics that will train Surf SC coaches in the methods and techniques currently implemented within their programs.
Manchester City’s youth academy is well known around the world and is focused on developing players for the EPL. With a goal of achieving greatness in soccer, the EPL Academy has always sought to attract, develop, motivate and retain the best natural talent by providing the best possible experience.
San Diego Surf Soccer Club has a successful affiliate program that includes Surf clubs in Los Angeles, San Clemente, Anaheim and other California cities, as well as other states such as Hawaii, Washington and Utah. In total, nearly 4,500 youth soccer players nationwide wear the Surf SC logo on their game jerseys. According to Manchester City’s website, “City Football Services, which brokered the deal and is responsible for City’s football know-how, will work with Surf Soccer to create an affiliate club coaching programme, which will see both Manchester City and Surf Soccer work to develop players and coaches from affiliated youth clubs throughout the terms of the partnership.”
