San Diego SeaLions Win Season Opener Against FC Tuscon
WPSL Women’s Soccer News: San Diego SeaLions won its season opener on Saturday night in a 4-0 victory over FC Tuscon at Cathedral Catholic High School in San Diego. Soli Gomez opened up scoring in the 26th minute as the SeaLions open the 2016 WPSL campaign with a win in front of its home crowd.
Soccer News: The San Diego SeaLions scored early and often Saturday night in romping to a season-opening 4-0 victory over previously unbeaten and division-leading FC Tucson. And in what may be a good omen, two of the goals were scored by SeaLion newcomers Leigh Ann Brown (USD/FC Kansas City) and Samantha Seiders (SDSU).
“We had a balanced game tonight,” said San Diego head coach Jen Lalor. “We played with intuition and passion. A great way to start the campaign.”
Soli Gomez (SDSU) opened the scoring in the 26th minute with a long-range strike that that sliced over Tucson goalkeeper Lainey Burnett and under the crossbar. Seven minutes later Brown followed with her first SeaLion goal. Tucson didn’t mount much of an attack after that.Angelina Hix (MiraCosta College), San Diego’s top scorer in 2015, picked up where she left off with a goal in the 55th minute, and rookie Seiders sealed the deal with a tap-in in the 94th minute, off an assist from newcomer Lili Andino (UC Irvine). Goalkeepers Kaycee Gunion (CSU-San Marcos) and Sydney Wootten (NC State) combined for the shutout, with Gunion notching 12 saves.
“The way we played tonight shows that we have had a productive preseason,” added assistant coach Lu Snyder. “Some key players were absent from the match, but we communicated well and showed confidence. Nice to see that this early in the year.”
