NWSL Soccer News: Portland Thorns FC forward Christine Sinclair has been named NWSL Player of the Week for the second week of the 2019 campaign.
Sinclair recorded a hat-trick in a thrilling 4-4 draw versus the Chicago Red Stars last weekend. The forward scored the opener in the 16th minute with a calm volley over Red Stars goalkeeper Alyssa Naeher. Lindsey Horan recorded the assist with a chipped ball over the Chicago back line.
In the 51st minute, Sinclair recorded her second goal to give Portland a 3-2 lead. The 35-year-old made a well-timed run that left her open in the box to finish a cross from Meghan Klingenberg.
The Canadian international’s hat-trick goal came from the penalty spot in the 87th minute. The tally gave the Thorns a brief 4-3 lead before the Red Stars equalized in the 90th minute.
The hat-trick performance is the second of Sinclair’s NWSL career and her second Player of the Week honor. She recorded her first hat-trick on July 20, 2014, at home versus the Boston Breakers and was named Player of the Week.
Sinclair has won four professional championships with three different teams: the 2010 WPS Championship with FC Gold Pride, the 2011 WPS Championship with Western New York Flash and the 2013 and 2017 NWSL Championships with Portland Thorns FC. She has also been named Canadian Player of the Year on 14 occasions.
Sinclair and Portland Thorns FC will travel to New Jersey for their next matchup versus Sky Blue FC on Sunday, April 28th. Kickoff is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. ET.
