Flash Midfielder Becky Edwards Voted Player Of The Week
Western New York Flash midfielder Becky Edwards was voted the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) Player of the Week by the media for Week 4 of the 2015 season.
Edwards, 26, recorded an assist and scored one goal in the second half to help carry the Flash to a 3-1 victory in their home opener against the Boston Breakers on Saturday evening at Sahlen’s Stadium in Rochester, N.Y.
The Downingtown, PA native’s assist came only eight minutes after their opponents had scored, when Edwards’ right-side free kick was won in the air by teammate Samantha Mewis, who headed the ball into the back of the net, ending the half at 1-1.
The Flash carried that momentum through the second half and the goal scoring would continue. Edwards’ put the Flash up with the second goal of the match in the 62nd minute, finishing a beautiful ball from teammate Lynn Williams.
The win was secured in the 88th minute when Abby Dahlkemper found forward Sydney Leroux, who was able to score her first goal with the Flash. This was Western New York’s first win of the season, after two tough losses on the road.
Edwards is the seventh Flash player to be honored as the NWSL Player of the Week. The award was given to Abby Wambach in Week 5 and 9 of the 2013 season, as well as Carli Lloyd, who received the award in Week 12 of the 2013 and 2014 seasons. Forwards Vicky Losada and Samantha Kerr both received the honor in 2014 during Weeks 1 and 9.
Western New York Flash will return to action Friday, May 8 at 7:00 p.m. ET against FC Kansas City at Sahlen’s Stadium in Rochester, N.Y.
