ScoutingZone’s Brooke Kentera Interviewed Drew Brees for SoccerToday
Brooke Kentera: As a Super Bowl hero, what advice do you have for young athletes who are looking to play collegiately or professionally?
Drew Brees: I always tried to play as many sports as I could and I learned so much as I went from each level of sport to the next — from little league to college to pro.
The game elevates, those around you always get better and better.
I always felt that there were different skill sets I would learn from playing the different sports which would help me with the sport that I ended up specializing in, which was football when I went to college. Today, I am going into my 19th season and I am still drawing on the skills I learned from playing different sports.
Play sports because you love it, because you are having fun.
Don’t be afraid to challenge yourself. Each level you step up, you will play
Brooke Kentera:: I want to piggyback off that and ask you for your thoughts on the pressure put on young athletes to be committed to just one sport. You are an advocate for playing as many youth sports as possible?
Drew Brees: I think we are becoming way too specialized. There is pressure on kids to get locked into one sport. Maybe it is because parents are told recruiting starts so young … but we don’t need kids to be specializing in one sport in second or third grade.
The cream will rise to the top.
I am a firm believer in playing as many sports as possible for as long as possible.
Brooke Kentera: Why become a significant investor of this organization? What appeals to you most?
Drew Brees: Surf is an organization that helps kids develop life lessons through sports.
Sports have played a huge role in my life and I’m thrilled about joining and sharing my energy and experiences with the leadership team. Surf Sports is the perfect partner for me and my family, and I believe our impact and reach will extend well beyond our local community as Surf already hosts several powerful events, locally as well as nationwide and provides a great experience for families.
