Tom Heinemann Named NASL Player of the Week
San Francisco Deltas forward Tom Heinemann has received NASL Player of the Week honors after leading his club to their first win in franchise history. A native of St. Louis, Heinemann joined the Deltas in the offseason after playing with the Tampa Bay Rowdies in 2016.
NASL Soccer News: The San Francisco Deltas recorded their first win in franchise history at Kezar Stadium on Saturday night led by forward Tom Heinemann.
The 29-year-old forward scored twice in the 3-1 victory over North Carolina FC – a performance that earned him NASL Player of the Week honors. Heinemann is the second Deltas player (Kyle Bekker, Week 1) to receive the award in 2017.
San Francisco didn’t kick off in stride on Saturday as visiting North Carolina got on the board first with midfielder Tiyi Shipalane scoring in the 23rd minute. Just before halftime, Heinemann gave the hosts some confidence going into the locker room, sneaking home a cross from teammate Cristian Portilla to level the score at 1-1.
Brazilian forward Pablo Dyego scored a highlight-reel goal in the 82nd minute from the top of the box to put the Deltas on the cusp of their first league win.
In the game’s final moments, Heinemann sealed all three points for San Francisco when he took a pass from Dyego, nutmegged defender Connor Tobin, and fired a shot into the back of the net to make the score 3-1.
Deltas sit in second place in the Spring Season Standings through three weeks.
The 6-foot-4 forward has reunited in San Francisco with Marc Dos Santos who was head coach of Ottawa Fury FC when Heinemann helped the Canadian side advance to the The Championship Final in 2015.
After two consecutive home matches to start the season, the Deltas will head on the road to face Jacksonville Armada FC on Saturday at 7 p.m. ET.
The matchup, which can be seen live on beIN SPORTS USA and beIN SPORTS CONNECT, will pit the league’s top two clubs against each other at Hodges Stadium in Jacksonville.
